Developmental education is all about breaking bad habits. Not every student learns the same way. While many are able to learn in a conventional classroom, there are some who would benefit with additional help. Many students who are struggling in school are involved in a frustrating cycle of failure. This lowers the student’s self esteem and makes them not want to learn.
There are many theories and techniques used in developmental education. The most effective techniques are designed for each individual child. Children with dyslexia, for example may have no problems comprehending a story they just read but find it difficult to remember the instructions that were just given. Some children may learn better through music. Others may need help in understanding the language and how words sound.
Developmental education should be available for every child who needs it, not just the affluent. Many children who are in need of developmental education are from low income families where they are not being stimulated intellectually at home. This may be because the parents have to work full time or they themselves are under educated.
Parents need to find a school that not only provides developmental education but also encourages and enhances a child’s self esteem. At a private school in Abington, PA students love to learn. Allison Enslein, the Director of Center School says, “Our teachers challenge their students while providing a nurturing, supportive environment in which to grow.”
