Is Forex trading psychological or technical?

February 7, 2012

We investigate the question all new Forex traders keep asking

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 7, 2012 -- This question has arisen many times in our industry. For some reason people struggle to find the answer but once you start your Forex training you will realize that it is both. For a start, to trade you need a computer and so therefore some basic technical skills. It also requires money which is probably the most psychologically damaging item in the world. So, trading is both psychological and technical - what does that mean? What is more important? What do we need to master? Why does either matter?

Consider parachute jumping. This sport also requires a fairly equal balance of both psychological and technical skills throughout the entire career. If you ever fail to pack your parachute in the correct technical way or if you lose the psychological ability to jump, you will not be a world class parachute jumper.

Now consider being a rocket scientist. Your entire career revolves around knowledge, understanding and learning. And not your psychological limitations and not governed by your psychological traits.

A professional Forex trader is almost the exact opposite to being a rocket scientist, and this is why trying to become a professional trader is so prevalent around the world. Once you have learnt the technical aspects of trading such as using the trading software, creating and understanding money management strategies and creating a trading strategy you could be set for life. Notwithstanding software and hardware upgrades you may never have to hone or adapt your technical trading skills again. Because of the very low technical requirements some people think that this means trading is simple and can be learnt very quickly and even self taught. Unfortunately, the trading world is filled with shrewd, intelligent and able traders who thrive on those people.

How can trading be so hard if it requires so little technical skills?

Trading isn’t a battle between you and other traders; it’s not even a battle between you and your broker. It is 100%, completely and totally, a battle between yourself, and yourself. You are in control of your future, your success and your failure. There is no boss to blame, no tool that hasn’t worked properly, never any excuses. Every time you place a trade it was your decision, your analysis and your account that will deal with the repercussions.

How do I beat myself?

A technical skill can be mastered with more effort, more reading, more studying. A psychological skill cannot. The only way you can get better at trading (once you have mastered the technical stuff!) is with experience – a whole lot of it.
