“Hello Kitty” has won the hearts of many people over the years when she appeared for the first time on a snap-top purse in 1975. There are approximately 12,000 “Hello Kitty” products in the market today, and Sanrio had introduced 600 new items every year.
In the past, “Hello Kitty” was in a global phenomenon worth $5 billion a year and now the sales have been shrinking for 10 consecutive years since 1999.
In 1998, Diahatsu Motor Co. created two “Hello Kitty” hatchback cars. The autos feature this cat’s image on the front grill, side panels, inside upholstery, and keys.
In 2005, Taiwan carrier, EVA Air, started flying a “Hello Kitty” passenger jet between Taiwan and Japan. This service was so popular that a second route was added not too long after the service was launched.
Also, in 2005, Mitsukoshi, a Japanese department store, created a $52,000 egg-sized “Hello Kitty” pendant embedded with mini carats of diamonds. Her red bow was made of rubies. Other jewelry included a $2,800.00 bracelet and a $4,200.00 necklace. There was also a one-carat diamond ring worth approximately $3,950.00, designed by Kimona Lee Simmons, available exclusively at Neiman Marcus.
Other products with her logo are computers, telephones, gum machines, playing cards, curling irons, hair dryers, shower radios, alarm clocks, clock radios, washing machines, toasters, vacuums, baking dishes, tooth brush holders, prom and wedding dresses.
The WatchTheClock.Com feature some of “Hello Kitty” clock radios that contain an alarm clock, wake-up to radio or buzzer, large easy to locate snooze button, built-in AC cord, and battery back-up for the clock.
Hopefully, Hello Kitty’s farewell will not happen too soon. The owner of the “Hello Kitty” character said that profits may boost by its logos on wines, wall paper, and mini-cars. There is hope that we will not be saying goodbye to this peculiar and curious white cat, but instead continue to have her purr her way into the hearts of the people.
