The latest CHAOS report by Standish Group based the on analysis of 70,000 IT projects shows that over 68% of them failed to meet their objectives. The quality of commercial software is decreasing every year. As Robert Charette said in his article for IEEE Spectrum, billions of dollars are wasted each year on bad software.
While the situation with commercial software is dramatic, open source industry experiences are quite the opposite. Free open source software products flourish with great success in every business domain. Mozilla Firefox, OpenOffice, MySQL, and Linux are just a few visible examples.
Two years ago, an initiative group of programmers, designers, architects, and project managers were organized to invent a new way to manage distributed software projects, which bring the benefits of the open source world into its commercial counterpart. The group is being managed by TechnoPark Corp., a custom software development general contracting company in Florida.
In November 2010, the group released the first beta version of eXtremely Distributed Software Development (XDSD) methodology, which claims to be a problem solver for commercial software development projects of almost any size.
XDSD gives four explicit instructions for commercial software projects about how people and source code should be managed in order to achieve higher quality and significantly reduce risks of failure. While the methodology is still in its beta version, TechnoPark Corp. has already started using XDSD in their business with outstanding results.
More information about XDSD is being published regularly on www.xdsd.org. The XDSD public initiative is actively looking for new members and contributors.
