FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) November 3, 2009 -- Despite all of the excitement about social media for business, a recent Citibank Small Business survey has poured cold water on the idea that small business folk are lining up to jump on the social media train.

The survey of 500 U.S. businesses with fewer than 100 employees found that three-quarters of small businesses say they have not found sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn helpful for generating business leads or expanding business in the past year.

Further, 86 per cent said they have not used social networking sites for business advice. Ten per cent said they have sought information on expert blogs.

What does this mean for small businesses wanting to grow their businesses using the power of online social networks? "Not a lot" says social media strategist and author, Philip van Zyl.

Philip van Zyl, author of the social media guide for business, continued: "Small business owners in most countries are are still grappling with the idea that social media may present a business growth opportunity. There is no industry standard on how to approach social media and every Tom, Dick and Sally is calling himself or herself a social media consultant. That is all fueling the confusion."

"The reality is that many businesses are succeeding in growing their business using social media. It is getting clear on your measure for success that is the key," van Zyl said.

Van Zyl explained some key steps for success "First get very clear on what your business goals are. Second, ensure you have a marketing plan that is going to help realize these goals. Third, integrate social media completely into your broader marketing plan. Fourth, ensure your website supports your marketing goals. And finally, have a very clear call to action on your website."

"Social media is the sixth step, and can now weave its magic by directing people who are interested in what you offer, to your website or blog. They will see the value in what you are offering, and will fulfill the call to action which benefits them and benefits you."

In response to the demand for a "get started" process that works, Van Zyl has announced the opening of registration for a "getting started" webinar for small business owners, solopreneurs and others looking to grow their business using social media.

The webinar takes place on the 12th November 2009 and seats can be booked here. http://www.smallbusinessnow.net/webinar The webinar will be co-hosted by certified guerilla marketing coach Ursula Kauth.
