HIPPS- onsists of 4 elements to isolate excess pressure. 1) Safety Loop - HIPPS 2) Initiators/Process Sensors 3) Logic Solver-The Programmable Electronic System (PES) 4) Final Elements

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) February 2, 2012 -- 1. Safety Loop – HIPPS includes all devices required to reach the desired safety integrity level for the process. The HIPPS includes the entire instrument loop from the field sensor through the logic solver to the final elements, along with other possible required devices, such as SIS user interfaces and communications.
2. Initiators/Process Sensors – The initiators are the elements measuring the process variables (PV) to sense an event. The initiators are typically electro-mechanical pressure switches or electronic pressure transmitters.

3. Logic Solver – The Programmable Electronic System (PES) receives the signals from the initiators, performs the required logics (voting, diagnostics, and partial stroke test routine) and drives the final elements.
4. Final Elements – The complete valves/actuators/solenoids assemblies are acted on to isolate the over pressure detected by the initiators. This is done with electronic sensors and logic electronics, hydraulics, and highly sophisticated valves.
But why? Consider this:
1. The Safety Loop? A simple self contained valve.
2. The initiator/sensor? A simple precise pin
3. The logic solver? A simple precise pin
4. The final element? A simple valve piston or clapper.

A Buckling Pin Model “JA” ESV can reliably close at a +/- 5% set point at the speed of the moving fluid.
However, it has to be manually reset. In most cases the basic cause of the over pressure condition has to be corrected before resetting is possible. Resetting pin replacement takes less than a minute. The precise pin obeys Euler’s Law.

Reliability can be verified under pressure. The price and maintenance is miniscule compared to a conventional HIPPS system. With rapid large mass liquid flow, the clapper fall must be restricted, a pulsation device installed upstream, or a simple balanced relief valve upstream but piped discharge downstream can be used. Over 8,000 Buckling Pin valves are in service.
The Model “JA” closes to protect downstream elements. The Model “JB” closes at a low pressure set point. This stops flow in case of a line break or an inadvertent downstream condition. Clarification of terms: Because there are over 1,000 variations over the past 23 years, Rupture Pin refers to valves that open at set pressure. Buckling Pin refers to valves that close at set pressure.
