Chandigarh(05-11-2010). It is generally said that in India the undue importance is given to the protection of Indian tigers. Infact very few people are aware of the socio-economic significance of the existence of this majestic big cat. Mere 1000 [or may be less] tigers are in the wild now. This was stated by Ms. Deepa Gupta,co-founder of www.thedestinationindia.com in a talk on Tigers and food security of India.

Wildlife experts and ecologists at the talk in Chandigarh stressed upon the fact that the existence of tigers in the wild has socio-economic significance. Tiger in the wild is at the apex of the food chain and is an indicator of the health of a forest. Tigers in India inhabit 39 tiger reserves which are the source of more than 300 rivers and streams providing precious water for all inhabitants of the nearby and distant areas.
Ms Deepa Gupta explained how these forests are crucial for water and food security of the country. These forests soak monsoon waters which is absorbed in the ground and in dry months comes to surface to form rivers and streams and provide this crucial force of life to the millions living in those areas.

Mr. Bharat, the writer –cum nature lover who wrote extensively on tigers explained how India’s food security is linked with the tigers. He said that the agriculture sector is the mainstay of Indian economy and demand for such products is soaring owing to burgeoning population.Tigers' presence in all these forests is a kind of check on the powerful land mafia which would influence mighty politicians and will denotify such areas for illegal felling of forests in case no tiger left in that area. Protection of these forests mainly revolves around the presence of tigers. The disappearance of these forests will lead to the disappearance of most of these rivers streams and their tributaries originating in these forests leading to large scale water shortage.
The disappearance of these perpetual sources of water would adversely impact the socio-economic lives of these people. There could be mass unrest and since a large number of such reserves are situated in the Naxalite affected areas, the socio-political impact of this problem would be immense on the country.

So, all the participants in the talk were unanimous on the fact that presence of tigers is indispensable for India's food security. Besides,continuous presence of tigers in these forests will act as a source of funds, attention and movement of tourists to these neglected but beautiful areas.
