There are basic safety rules that children should be taught at a young age, that will help them to identify and avoid potentially dangerous situations. Just starting with one simple rule can not only make a huge difference in an emergency situation, but also help open up a dialog about other important best practices. For example, all young children should memorize their first and last names, complete physical address, an emergency phone number, and their parents (or guardians) first and last names. This basic information is enough for a security guard or store employee to help a child who has simply wandered off. “Sometimes a child becomes missing for benign reasons, and not because a predator has taken him or her,” says child safety advocate, Michael Pouls, “Making sure your child has memorized emergency contact information can make the difference between very quickly reuniting a lost child with his/her family versus hours of undue stress.” For children too young to memorize this information, it’s always a good idea to write it down on a piece of paper, and tuck it in the child’s pocket. As Michael Pouls explains, “Young Timmy may be too young to remember a phone number, especially when he feels scared and stressed, but you have a good chance that he will remember that the information is in his pocket, and he can simply give it to a helpful bystander, such as a police officer, security guard, life guard, etc.” For more child safety tips, please visit michaelpouls.info.
