San Francisco Bay Area pest control company offers ways to prevent entry of rodents into your house and the do's and don't of getting rid of them once they enter.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Alameda, California, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) December 15, 2011 -- OAKLAND - As the weather gets colder outside and your family snuggles indoors, rodents such as rats and mice want to join you. They are looking for warmth, food, and a place to nest. Keeping them out is the best thing you can do, because once they make it indoors, they can be very difficult to get rid of.

The first step is to do a thorough inspection of the exterior of your house or apartment building. You can do this yourself or hire an expert. Take a look at everything at ground level: the foundation, vents, and bottoms of doors. Are there any small openings for rats or mice? These need to be sealed up.

It's also get wood piles and clutter away from the house by at least 1 or 2 feet and trim trees back at least 6 feet from the structure if possible. You do not want them to nest so close to your house because their next step is inside.

When it's dark, it's a good idea to close the garage door immediately so they don't scramble in. And avoid leaving food outside in the yard for your pets or the neighborhood cats. This will attract rodents. Also note that most pet foods are fortified with Vitamin K1, which is actually an antidote for rat and mouse poisons that you hopefully will not need to use.

Once rats and mice have gained entry, they are very difficult to control and can do all kinds of damage. What kind of damage? They can chew through electrical wire and start a fire. They can defecate and urinate all over your insulation creating a foul odor. They also chew through the rubber water pipes underneath your dishwasher thus flooding your kitchen when the pressurized line is compromised. (It's a good idea to spend the extra $10 for the braided stainless steel pipe for your dishwasher.)

And home sellers beware: if there is evidence of rats and mice up in your attic, house inspectors can refuse to go up there to complete their inspection. They can also make note of  rodent evidence in their inspection report and make recommendations that the area be cleaned and sanitized.  This can end up being very costly.

So what do you do if you already have rats and mice? The best thing to do is to trap them, especially if you have pets and/or children in the home. The problem with using poison is you can't control where the rodents die, leaving you with a very stinky aftermath. Mice are small and can decompose quickly but rats are larger and, if they die under your floorboards or inside your wall, you have a lingering problem.

Omega Pest Control does not use poison inside of the structure for rats. We have seen other Pest Control companies put out bait but not do the dirty work of cleaning up. The trapping process does require daily attention in order to pick up the snap traps and glue boards. But this process, along with closing all of the entries, will get rid of your rat or mouse infestation for good.

"We are not interested in population control -- our goal is to make your property uninviting for rats and mice," said Omega's Matthew Fisher. "Exclusion works. We want to solve the problem and move on."
