FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Long Island, New York, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) November 14, 2011 -- Adelphi University hosts “In Search of Our Children: The Missing, Endangered, and Lost,” presented by the director of the M.F.A. program at Adelphi University, Jacqueline Jones LaMon on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event is sponsored by the James Baldwin Lecture series and the Center for African, Black and Caribbean Studies. This event is free and open to the public.

Jacqueline Jones LaMon is currently the director of the M.F.A. program in Creative Writing at Adelphi University, where she teaches poetry, literature and pedagogy. Her first poetry collection titled Gravity, U.S.A., received the Quercus Review Press Poetry Series Book Award. Her second poetry collection, Last Seen, which was inspired by actual case histories of long-term missing African-American children, was the recipient of the 2011 Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry. As part of the presentation, she will be reading poems from Last Seen. Professor LaMon has continuously published other scholarly/artistic work since 1998. She is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College, UCLA School of Law, and Indiana University Bloomington, where she earned an M.F.A. in poetry.

The Center for African, Black and Caribbean Studies builds on decades of success in offering interdisciplinary teaching, scholarship, and cultural programming. The Center’s primary focus remains on providing an interdisciplinary minor degree in African, Black, and Caribbean Studies that creates emphasis on exploring the history, culture, and contemporary dimensions of peoples of African descent.

The M.F.A. in Creative Writing offers students the opportunity to specialize in three major genres: fiction, poetry, and dramatic writing. This cross-genre program is distinctive from the traditional two-genre M.F.A. programs in which students study either fiction or poetry. It offers graduate students many unique opportunities, including the Thesis Colloquium and the Professional Development Practicum, which introduce students to the professional and practical life of writers across many disciplines.
