Adam Mangino, a private investigator hired by Jason Williams, the ex-NBA player for the New Jersey Nets, has been accused of fraud, theft, malicious prosecution, slander and several other seriously damaging charges, according to a lawsuit that lawyers anticipate filing in the Ocean County Superior Court of New Jersey.
According to the filing, Mangino willfully swore under oath stating his late mother, Rose Mangino died intestate. Adam Mangino had been deliberately disinherited by his late mother in her will years prior for abandoning her. According to a complaint to be filed in February, Mangino was fully aware of the existence of the will and had familiarized himself with all the details surrounding his late mother’s wishes.
Mangino, who, according to family members, was estranged from his mother, had left her in the care of his only sibling, the late Barbara Tornillo for the last several years of her life. Transferring all of her assets to her daughter Barbara when she committed to living and caring for her in the later years of her life, Rose Mangino made it clear in her will that Adam Mangino was “not a beneficiary under the terms of (the) will” and was entitled to nothing.
Outliving both his late sister and mother, it is alleged that Adam Mangino discovered the legally executed will prior to either death, and lied in an effort to control and distribute the entire value of the estate to himself. According to an Ocean County Superior Court filing by Mangino in May of 2009, he swears, under oath, that his mother died “intestate”. This action came three weeks after penning a letter to his nephew, the son of Barbara Tornillo, stating details contained in the will and requesting the original be delivered to him for probate.
The suit alleges that after securing authorization from the court to administer the estate by using false testimony, Mangino began rifling the estate and selling off assets totaling over $350,000, all of which the suit claims belongs to his only nephew Michael Tornillo. According to the legal will of Rose Mangino, filed and accepted by the Ocean County Probate Court last summer, the will is clear that any and all assets in the estate should pass “per stirpes” to Michael Tornillo.
Adam Mangino, a licensed and practicing private investigator and former special agent for the DEA, aware of the facts of his late mother’s will, deliberately and maliciously mismanaged the estate by committing perjury and fraud according to the pending suit to be filed by the lawyers representing the estate. His motive was to exhaust most or all of the assets to avoid allowing them to pass to his “godson” Michael Tornillo.
Mangino, working with the defense team of Jason Williams and testifying on Williams’ behalf, during his trial in 2004, has used his experience and knowledge of the justice system to purport a serious crime according to the suit papers. “His creditability comes into serious question here.” says Tornillo, the key witness in the suit.
Criminal charges will be investigated and filed against Mangino, in a private prosecution case, should the civil case be tried and proven according to the legal team.
According to witnesses, Adam Mangino failed to arrange or attended his late mother and sister’s funeral services in 2008 and 2009, leaving all arrangements to be made by her grandson and only legal living heir, Michael Tornillo. Ocean County Superior Court records show that Tornillo had to foot the bill for a long and trying battle before Judge Peterson just to have the will admitted to probate due to Mangino’s repeated objections.
Mr. Tornillo’s legal team is working diligently to resolve the matter before having to file the suit in court but according to Mr. Tornillo, little progress has been made due to Mr. Mangino’s obstinate and malicious attitude.
