BOCA RATON, FLORIDA – The City of Boca Raton has announced a fall series of seven FREE Jazz Concerts, “Jazz Live at MPA,” at the Mizner Park Amphitheater, 590 Plaza Real in Boca Raton, starting Thursday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. with music by Palo!
PALO! has become a favorite among South Florida’s live music devotees. The group plays a style of extremely danceable music they call “Afro-Cuban Funk.” Their appeal lies in their unmatched musical energy, catchy original songs, and amazing display of impromptu virtuosity. A mix of Latin and Urban sounds gives PALO! their unique, infectious style.
PALO! was formed in 2003 when Steve Roitstein invited fellow musicians Leslie Cartaya (vocals), Philbert Armenteros (vocals, percussion), Ed Calle (sax) and Raymer Olalde (vocals, percussion) to join him in an improvised musical experiment combining Cuban music with funk beats.
“We had a tremendous response from the community with our summer concert series, and I think it proved that people are hungry for live music downtown,” said Chrissy Biagiotti, Manager of Cultural Facilities for the City of Boca Raton. “We’ve got an amazing line up, and I hope we’ll be able to introduce these great local and regional acts to a new audience. This Jazz series has a little something for everyone, and I would encourage people to come check it out. If you have an idea of what you think Jazz is, I think this will change your mind.”
Two of the community partners for the series include Stu Grant, host of the Sunday Jazz Brunch radio program on Miami’s new WZAB-AM880 “The Biz”, and Jazziz magazine. Stu Grant has hosted and promoted numerous jazz venues throughout the South Florida area over the years. His iconic voice will be introducing the artists at each concert event.
Jazziz magazine, which has been covering the Jazz world for 25 years, is also supporting the series and will be on site with copies of its glossy magazine and opportunities for free jazz compilation CDs, which are distributed with the magazine.
JAZZIZ has been called “the voice of a new jazz culture; a culture it helped create.” As the undisputed authority on jazz and style, it gives you the lowdown, in print and online, on what’s hot (and what’s not) in the world of jazz with insightful editorial, hundreds of CD reviews, and inspired photography and design.
While the concerts are free to the public, attendees are encouraged to rent a chair, purchase food and beverages and park in the preferred lot next to the amphitheater. Proceeds from these ancillary revenues allow the city sponsored events to remain free.
Blankets and chairs are allowed, but chairs will also be available to rent for $2.00. There is a premium seating area in front of the stage or upstairs in the colonnades, where the chairs are $5.00. Food and beverages will offered on site, and therefore outside food and beverages are prohibited. Preferred parking is available next to the amphitheater for $5.00.
All events are rain or shine, and in the case of inclement weather, the concerts will be presented at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theater, which is located at the South end of Mizner Park (201 Plaza Real). Seating at this venue will be limited to the first 250 people.
