It seems like Hollywood may be influencing criminal masterminds, but this isn’t The Italian Job, it’s the Utah job. Many crooks are attempting to thwart wedding day wishes for hopeful brides by stealing rings, necklaces, and other jewelry. Recently, many jewelers have been robbed in their stores, and even on their way to the airport. They say that they’re more serious about preventing theft, with the use of surveillance cameras, and even a concealed weapons permit which allows them to carry a gun without anyone knowing. And with Valentines Day fast approaching and new inventory entering stores, they’re ramping up security measures immediately.
If you were a thief and robbed a smart wedding ring jeweler, you’d be sorely disappointed when you went to pawn the wedding bands only to realize they’re made of alloys and fake stones. These look great in the case, and aren’t worth more than ten dollars. Display sets are a great deterrent, as nobody in their right mind is going to commit a felony for ten dollars. Alternative metals are also being used for display. For example,Tungsten wedding bands are mostly comprised of labor cost, and don’t have much resale value on the street without being able to size them or give lifetime warranties.
Some jewelers are having serious problems. They’ve been robbed, but can’t get the insurance companies to compensate them for their losses. After police investigations, they argue that things seem too fishy. The jewelers are setting themselves up for serious loss when their security cameras fail and alarm systems malfunction. In some examples, a consistent dollar value for inventory was also not established and there seems to have been an unusual increase in valuables available for theft on the day of the incident.
For now, it seems the safest bet is to have a planned system in effect. Keep doors locked, cameras running, and safes full of ‘dummy’ wedding rings that aren’t worth stealing anyway. It seems foolish not to take a few precautionary measures to protect a business that may have been years in the making. Sweethearts looking for infallible gifts for February 14th or perhaps and engagement ring to pop the big question with need not fear. None of the incidents reported had involved any customers to date.
