SAN DIEGO – February 9, 2010 – JMAR, LLC , leading innovator of laser based product solutions; specializing in microbiological detection of organisms in water, environmental gas emissions and explosives detection, announced that they have developed a dual wavelength UV DIAL transmitter for atmospheric Ozone research. Historically, accessing the UV band needed for Ozone DIAL has been mainly achieved through frequency doubling liquid dye lasers or Raman shifting in high pressure hydrogen. Tunable OPO systems have existed for years, but are large, complex, inefficient, and typically low rep-rate. “We are pleased to bring together our resources, expertise, and the flexibility of our OPO technology to produce cutting edge products that allow critical research to move forward in the field of Atmospheric Ozone Monitoring,” said Dave Wessing, President and CEO of JMAR, LLC.
The current JMAR system is designed specifically to access the 290-300 nm range required for Ozone LIDAR measurements and evaluation of pollution from the ground to the atmospheric boundary layer. With the JMAR nonlinear optical approach used in this system, many other wavelength pairs can be achieved for virtually any DIAL measurement. Two fixed frequency OPOs are set up and their outputs are then mixed with the pump laser harmonic wavelengths to achieve the required DIAL wavelengths. This product delivers a combined 200 mW of UV power at 250 HZ (125 Hz DIAL when switched). Despite making approximately 1 mJ of UV at each wavelength, the overall system uses less than 7A of standard 110 VAC power including the chiller and weighs less than 100 lbs. Its rugged design opens it up to several possible field applications, and the overall approach is readily scalable in energy and rep-rate. The heart of the UV DIAL system is JMAR’s new, compact DPSS Nd:YAG laser that was specifically developed to pump the nonlinear optical conversion stages. This 8W, line narrowed pump laser is available separately as well.
