Job Hunting in the Dayton?

Steve was at a low point in life when he made his way to New Day one Sunday. After struggling with alcohol addiction, he’d lost relationships and work. He was broke, lonely and desperate. In just weeks of attending New Day and hearing a message of God’s love, he was ready to turn over his life to Christ.

As Pastor Barry Jude (www.broadlf.com/NewDay/blog/) introduced Steve to the church and his decision for Christ, he also related a little of what brought him there: “Steve needs a job,” he said. “So if you know of anything …”

Someone did. Chip and Marna Parker were still in the process of moving to Ohio after Chip accepted a job as Junior ROTC instructor at Lebanon High School. Chip, who had recently retired from active Air Force and had been living in Atlanta, Georgia, credits New Day Church with helping him get his permanent position. “Lots of people all over the country were praying for us to find the right spot. I interviewed for similar positions in several cities in other states, but this is the job I landed. I have to believe it was because New Day prayed the hardest.”

After witnessing Steve’s conversion, Marna described Steve’s situation to her brother-in-law, who owns a local business. She arranged for Steve to interview with the company. He received Christ, gained a church family—and got the job, all within weeks of attending church for the first time.

“Here in the Dayton, Ohio, job losses and job searches are ongoing,” Jude said, noting that Dayton has consistently ranked as one of the top cities in the country for job losses. “It’s hard on individuals, and it’s hard on families. Yet we choose to look at these situations as opportunities: to see God work and to see God work through people.”

Therefore, the church encourages job seekers to share their job situations, histories and resumes and, in turn, for members to be alert to openings and use their connections to recommend people for jobs. Most important, according to Jude, is praying earnestly for job seekers. “When you pray for a job on your own, that’s good. But there’s great strength in numbers when an entire church prays for you.

“Sometimes we have been instrumental in helping someone secure an interview,” Jude said. “I know of several situations where that resulted in employment.”

Jude said there is no secret to the process. “When it comes to job hunting, as we all know, it’s often about networking, who you know. We know Jesus. That’s the best connection for a job seeker.”
