Pasadena, CA, July 22, 2010 – Since May 2009, the airline industry’s payrolls have decreased by 2.7 percent, in total numbers a loss of 13,670 jobs. Jobs in the airline industry have declined for 23 consecutive months. The total number of both full-time and part-time employees in the industry was 562,485. The data gathered is from the Bureau of Transportation.
The airlines with the biggest job losses since May 2009 were American, Comair, and Continental each with over 2,000 layoffs. Frontier with 452 new hires and JetBlue with 504 hires were among the few airlines who added a substantial number of jobs. The International Air Transport Association, in its survey of global airlines found out that most airlines planned to hire more employees in the next 12 months.
The industry is still trying to recover from the hikes in fuel costs and downturn in passenger traffic of the last two years. However, AviationCrossing.com, a niche job site focusing on just jobs in the aviation industry has been able to list almost 3,000 jobs. “All the big airlines have been reducing their staff, but the budget airlines and other smaller airlines are still hiring, especially technical people.” says A. Harrison Barnes, CEO of AviationCrossing.
