Created in 1992, the Art of Verdadism by Soraida pioneered the socially conscious movement that’s finding expression today in America and worldwide. Ahead of her time, Soraida was painting and addressing many of the social issues that are now being openly discussed in American society.

One of the paintings in this exhibition, “When Money Gets Ugly, © 1998,” spoke about the corporate greed that is now fueling the Occupy Wall Street movement. Another painting, “One Day I Found a Lump in My Breast, © 1994,” chronicled the traumatic experience of the possibility of having breast cancer at a time when it was still taboo to talk about this disease. The painting, “America: So Sophisticated, Yet So Primitive…When it Comes to Giving Our People Medical Care, © 2000,” criticized an American health system that denies medical treatment to suffering, uninsured Americans, years before Michael Moore’s movie “Sicko” and the current debate on health care in America.

Nowadays, Soraida’s paintings and social commentaries are published in college and university textbooks, where students can read about the artist’s efforts to strive to raise an awareness of humanity through tolerance, understanding and empowerment. This truth seeking exhibition and art talk by Soraida intends to open up the viewer’s mind to think about the inequality and injustices in today’s society, so that they too can help in the struggle to achieve social change.

The John Hopkins University Verdadism Exhibition and Art Talk for Hispanic Heritage Month is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs. The Verdadism Exhibition can be viewed at Charles Commons, 33rd Street between North Charles and St. Paul Streets, on Monday, October 24, 2011, from 12:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The Verdadism Art Talk will start at 7:00 PM and end at approximately 9:00 PM. This event is open to the students and faculty of John Hopkins University, as well as the general public.
