FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bend, Oregon, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) September 26, 2011 -- Kaneohe/Kailua Dentists Dr. Cynthia Ichiriu Keller and Dr. Bruce Keller are advising caution when selecting toothpaste and warn that whitening toothpastes can damage teeth.

Whitening toothpastes provide their benefit in several different ways. Many brands of toothpaste simply enhance the abrasive characteristics of their product. Other brands add chemicals that whiten teeth and may or may not add additional abrasive power to the mix. Abrasives can help remove stains from foods, coffee, and even smoking. However, abrasives can also damage teeth by removing the enamel on teeth, cause receding gums, and make notched out deformities the root surface of teeth.

Dr. Cynthia Keller says, “We are seeing an increasing number of patients with extremely shinny, glass like surfaces of their teeth but the teeth appear yellow. It’s unfortunate that they have polished away the white outer layer of their teeth and have exposed the yellow dentin of the tooth below. We recommend that patients avoid abrasive toothpastes to whiten their teeth. We recommend instead peroxide based whitening toothpastes, or better, professional whitening methods.” Dr. Bruce Keller adds, “The irony is that by trying to whiten their teeth, patients are actually wearing away their tooth enamel and making their teeth more yellow. Then, in an effort to remove the yellow they brush even harder and more often. ”
