Compression spring designers have a few known details; usually a general load, deflection, and space allowed are generally known at the beginning of the compression spring design process. Knowing how the spring is to be installed and what type of surface, flat or not, the spring will be on is helpful in determining if the compression spring should be ground.

Compression Spring Rate
In a compression spring design, deflection is related proportionally to spring load. Load increases as the compression spring deflects.
Compression Spring Index
Index is a compression spring’s ratio of the mean diameter of the spring to the diameter of the wire. The index is important to a compression spring’s manufacturing capability and should be between 3-14.
Compression Spring Number of Coils or Turns

The number of compression spring coils should be referenced in a compression spring design. The compression spring manufacturer will have to vary the number of coils to meet the rate and load requirements.
Compression Spring Solid Height
Compression spring solid height is the length of the spring when all the coils are compressed and the compression spring is closed. With ground end compression springs, the solid height is the total number of coils times the wire diameter. On closed compression springs, the solid height is the total number of coils times the wire diameter, plus one extra wire diameter.

Solid height is typically called out as a maximum solid height. It is always a good idea to add a half a wire size to your compression spring design to allow for extra solid height.
Compression Spring Free Height
The compression spring free length or height is the length of the compression spring when it is fully unloaded or free. A free length is typically called out on a compression spring design when there is no load.
Referencing the free length dimension will allow the spring manufacturer to vary the free length to meet the compression spring load requirements.

Compression Spring Wind Direction

A compression spring can be specified as either left hand or right hand. A compression spring is manufactured at the discrepancy of the spring manufacturer if the wind direction is not specified. A compression spring is wound in opposite directions when nested or screwed together.
Compression Spring Clearance
A compression spring clearance must be allowed to have clearance when functioning in a hole or over a rod. The OD and ID of a compression spring changes when the compression spring is deflected. Compression Spring clearance needs to be approximately 10% of the compression spring's diameter.
Compression Spring Buckling
If the free length of your compression spring design is more than four times the mean diameter then stability in buckling can occur. In these cases the compression spring needs to be guided over a rod.

Compression Spring Design Hints
Compression Spring stress depends upon the volume and type of material in the compression spring within a given load and deflection. Increasing the volume of compression spring material will decrease the stress level. You can do this in several ways -
Increase the compression spring wire size or use higher tensile strength spring wire
Increase the compression spring outside diameter
Increase the number of compression spring active coils
Use a rectangular spring wire or nested springs
