Katy TX garage door expert alarmed by the spike in home invasions through garage doors

Joe King, owner of Lone Star Overhead Doors of Katy, Texas (http://www.garagedoorrepairkatytexas.com) was reacting to a spate of recent reports across the country that thieves burglarize homes through the garage doors.

This week, police departments around the country reported upsurge in home invasions. The thieves gain access to the homes through the garage door.

King said all residents need to do to stop the thieves is secure their garage door remote controls.

“It is really not complex. All the homeowner or residents need to do is hide their remote control. Just do not leave it in your car at the end of the day,” King said yesterday.

Police departments and Sheriff deputies in Seattle and other cities around the nation report uptick in the number of these burglaries.

"I would say it's more than a coincidence that it's in the same geographical area and the same method of getting in the house each time," said Sgt. Cindi West of the King County Sheriff's Office in Washington State area.

To gain access to the home, thieves would ransack through cars parked on driveways while families sleep. “Once they have the remote control, it is just a question of clicking the button and they are in the house,”Sgt. Cindy West added.

Seattle area resident, Dave Neale is a recent victim. He said the thieves went into the car, found the garage door remote and in seconds were inside his home where they stole credit and debit cards before being scared away by the family dog. Neale’s family was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom when the incident happened.

“Take your garage door openers out of your car. This is not a new trend. It's happened for years," she warned homeowners.
Joe King said that is a sound advice and Katy residents need to heed it. “That is what homeowners really need to do to stop these thieves. Take your garage door remote control with you. Don’t leave it in your car,” he added.
