THE travel industry is stepping up its efforts to offer greener holidays and prove that it’s perfectly possible to see the world without causing undue damage.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) August 3, 2009 -- If you’re planning a summer getaway and want to cut your carbon
footprint, take a look at the top ten tips from Greenasap.co.uk – the new
comparison website for all things green.

1. As well as shopping for sunglasses and beachwear, take half an hour to track
down biodegradable cleaning products and toiletries for your trip. Also aim to
take as little packaging as possible as some countries struggle to dispose of
waste so do your recycling at home in advance.

2. For holidays abroad check out airlines that have pledged to cut their carbon
emissions or which already operate more fuel efficient aircraft. Alternatively
consider travelling by rail or ferry – both of which are much less detrimental to
the environment

than flying.

3. If you do fly then try to reduce the number of internal flights and stopovers en
route especially as taking off and landing releases the most C02 emissions.

4. When you arrive at your destination, make an effort to use public transport or
walk or cycle when possible. You’ll enjoy a break from driving - and getting
lost - and probably enjoy the sights and sounds much more.

5. Research a few travel operators and hotels to see if they have a defined
environmental policy and try to choose one that supports the local economy
by using local suppliers.

6. Banish all memories of childhood holidays spent in cramped conditions under
canvas and consider camping in a modern, comfortable

tent or caravan.
Some campsites include environmentally friendly extras such as bike hire or
shops and eating places that offer organic or locally sourced food.

7. Think about a working holiday and combine a love of travel and new
experiences with making a practical contribution to protecting the planet.
Coastal and countryside breaks both here and abroad with all sorts of
conservation work included are increasingly available and the ideal choice if
you want to come home with a clear conscience as well as a suntan.

8. Families need plenty of activities to keep youngsters entertained but how
about helping them learn about their environment too? Get back to nature by
staying on a farm, hire a canal boat or try a horse riding or outdoor adventure
holiday. If sun and sand are a must then do a spot of homework to find out
which companies are leading the way with green credentials.

9. Souvenirs are a lasting reminder of an enjoyable trip but try to buy locally
produced items instead of imported ones. They will be all the more authentic
and your purchase will support the local economy.

10. Wherever your destination or length of stay, make every effort to travel light.
The heavier your bags, the more fuel will be needed by any mode of transport
you use – and there’ll be less washing and ironing to do when you get home!
