In response to the growing need for information regarding child sexual abuse prevention, Jill Starishevsky, prosecutor of child abuse and sex crimes and author of acclaimed children's book My Body Belongs to Me will be speaking at the Museum of Motherhood on December 8, 2011. Studies show that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys is sexually abused by age 18 in the United States. In a talk entitled My Body Belongs to Me: Keeping Your Children Safe from Predators, Ms. Starishevsky will be providing parents with 10 tips to keep their children safe, addressing three big truths about child sexual abuse, discussing the cycle of silence and teaching parents and educators how to equip children as young as 3-years old to learn the language and skills that can protect them from sexual predators.
Ms. Starishevsky will also be addressing Erin's Law, a bill that New York State intends to introduce which would require mandatory child sexual abuse prevention education be taught in school.
Ms. Starishevsky has prosecuted child abuse and sex crimes in New York City for more than a decade. She will speak as an author who seeks to prevent child sexual abuse through education and to encourage children suffering in silence to disclose. Her book is geared to 3- to-10-year olds and was recently featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
The Museum of Motherhood is located at 401 East 84th Street, New York, NY (lower level). The talk begins at 7 pm and will include a question and answer period at the end.
