Following the fatal explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in May 2010, most oil and gas industry giants have been re-directing their attention and efforts to HSE. Whether or not to re-visit the current safety levels and develop strict environmental and social responsibility processes is not a debatable matter anymore.
Under the patronage of HE Dr. Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy & Industry and Chairman of Qatar Petroleum, Fleming Gulf’s 7th Annual Forum in Energy gathered around 300 leading regional and international industrial stakeholders from the oil and gas sectors to tackle the rising public expectation of the industry that goes beyond the simple compliance to EHS requirements and regulations.
Embedding the theme of “Moulding the future of HSE Fraternity: Global Vision & Local Practise”, the list of speaker and panel members attending the conference is a veritable ‘who’s who’ of health, safety and environmental experts from the oil and gas sector from across the globe. Companies presenting to the forum include Qatar Petroleum, Qatargas, RasGas, Saudi Aramco, BP and many more.
Mr. Darryl C. Hill, Vice President, Safety and Health North America and Past ASSE President 2010 – 2011; unveiled day 1 with his inspiring words to uphold the HSE values. As he emphasised on the essence of learning from past accident to gain foothold in future, he also voiced his thoughts on the critical integration of Corporate Social Responsibility in a business module. Excerpts from his speech :-
“Key lessons learned from the disasters are the need to address the warning signs. Before each disaster and most fatalities, serious incidents, there are warning signs that if corrected could have prevented the disasters.
Furthermore, Corporate Social Responsibility is a critical component in many organizations. Corporate Social Responsibility is a subset of Sustainability, thus it must be integrated into the business because it demonstrates commitment to human rights and providing a safe and healthy work environment where a company conducts business. Thus, the HSE professional will be increasingly looked upon to provide their organizations key strategies to improve HSE performance, as business leaders now understand the importance of HSE to the bottom line, and more importantly, as a key business competitive advantage.
Thus, I encourage and challenge each of you to participate in the interactive workshops and round tables, ask questions, and network with your colleagues and peers to gain the most from this tremendous learning experience that will facilitate advancing the Body of Knowledge in the oil & gas and energy industries.”
Following his words of virtue, Mr. Saad Al Kubaisi, Corporate HSE Manager of Qatar Petroleum delivered the keynote speech focussing on the HSE Vision and Mission in light of QATAR Vision 2030.
The key highlight of the day was the excusive panel discussion focused on the Actual Return of Investment in HSE. HSE Experts from Qatar Petroleum, Pearl GTL – Shell Qatar, Qatargas, Dolphin Energy, Dow Chemicals and RasGas Company Limited shared their thoughts on real worth of investment by stressing that it is not what HSE costs, it is what HSE SAVES. The panel answered host of questions from the floor reaffirming their heart-felt commitment towards HSE.
The conference is supported by Qatar Petroleum and sponsors namely eVision, Dupont, BST, Bertin Technologies, SAP, ChemSafe, Ras Laffan Industrial City, QISC, Madina Group, Morgan Thermal Ceramics and many more. Endorsed by ASSE, IPIECA, British Safety Council, IOSH, Nebosh and British Occupational Hygiene Society, the 7th Annual HSE Forum in Energy organized by Fleming Gulf Conferences hosted more than 300 delegates during the first day.
