One of the goals of the Karting Industry Council is to provide the necessary statistics and demographics about the participants and the sport on the whole.
Safety is a critical aspect that as an industry advocate we must be able to provide reliable, independent and auditable data on the sport in terms of injury.
Through our investigation, we have located some data to start our collection process. This is actually from the Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program. While the information is dated, it does support the safe notion of performance karting. The CHIRPP report is extracted from a database of 273,278 patient records of individuals over the age of five that reported go-kart related accidents.
While the program runs annual reports, the latest report specific to karting was over the 2000-2002 period. The KIC will continue to source additional data reports from the US insurance Industry, participating insurance carriers and other organizations to provide the most up-to-date statistics available.
Of the recorded 2 year total of incidents only 134 records involve karting. This is less than .05% of all CHIRPP cases and 0.1% of all sports and recreation injuries over the same time frame and age range.
Another highlight was the fact that two-thirds of the cases occurred in an organized setting at a Go-cart track or raceway/speedway. A smaller proportion (22.4%) occurred in an informal setting, some of which involved homemade Go-carts.
New Study Coming
To move this safety research into a more current status, our Director of Tracks, Mitch Wright (General Manager of the new NOLA Motorsports Park), is heading up a new research project and has extended a hand to leading karting insurance providers to try and collect new data. The value of this information is invaluable to both business growth as well as the ability to attract major sponsorship brands. Stay tuned for progress reports our continued efforts.
