Richard Jeanty releases his 12th book, HoodFellas II: American Gangster on his own RJ Publications. Penned well over a year ago, the author's latest work of fiction taps into the hardship and socio-economic issues that plagued his home island of Haiti well before the Jan 12th earthquake. HoodFellas II: American Gangster takes a peak into the kidnapping for ransom crime ring that is a well-kept secret in Haiti.
This sequel is the tale of Deon Campbell’s first trip to Haiti, the first black republic. Fresh out of prison, Deon is offered an opportunity by a friend to make a lucrative business deal to increase his capital and live a peaceful and prosperous life outside of the US. Deon finds himself navigating in the foreign lands of Haiti, where he never thought that he would be double-crossed and kidnapped for a ransom by the most ruthless thugs that he has ever encountered. As he soon finds out, his life is for sale and he better find a quick way to pay.
Since the 1986 departure of former president Baby Doc from office, "Kidnappings" have been Haiti's dirty little secret. "It’s been kept hidden from the rest of the world because power officials don’t want their already weak economy to be affected by the lack of tourism. The kidnapping situation in Haiti increased as the US started deporting an alarming number of Haitians back to their homeland. Faced with hardship, these people resorted to kidnapping others for ransom to survive.” states Jeanty.
Jeanty explains in his book that compared to the United States where poor families are offered food stamps and subsidized housing and other economic relief by the government; in Haiti, relief only comes in the form of money sent to those people who have relatives who live abroad. The ones without such aid suffer the worst kind of inhumane treatment, hunger, malnourishment, social inadequacies and the worst health. The hardship has forced many of its delinquents to become criminals of the worst kind.
Although HoodFellas II: American Gangster is a work of fiction, Jeanty has penned some current realities that he hopes will open up the eyes of his readers and inspire them to work harder and appreciate what they have been given here in the United States. In his introduction he states “My experience in Haiti has taught me to appreciate everything that I have in America. From this day on, I pledge not to complain about things that I take for granted, but are considered luxuries to others. Now I can say I appreciate my life and I plan to help make the lives of those around me better. “ A man of his word, Jeanty awards an annual scholarship of $2,000 to a high school senior who is furthering their education in the areas of arts, communication or journalism.
Richard Jeanty was born in Haiti and came to the US at age 10. He is an accomplished author, artist, poet, and entrepreneur. He received his BA from the University of Masachusetts. He resides in NYC.
