Kidney Cancer Association Launches Facebook Awareness Campaign

June 30, 2010

Cancer charity aims to spread awareness of the need for kidney cancer research and education.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) June 30, 2010 --The Kidney Cancer Association (KCA), a global charity based in suburban Chicago, announces the launch of a Facebook(R) advertising campaign aimed at developing awareness for this silent killer.

"We want to conquer kidney cancer in your lifetime," says KCA CEO Bill Bro, a 21-year survivor of kidney cancer. "Like many patients, my diagnosis came as the result of something unrelated. Because kidney cancer doesn't have obvious symptoms, it is often overlooked by both patients and doctors."

The KCA's Facebook(R) advertising campaign aims to increase awareness by focusing on some of the risk factors for the development of renal malignancies. Ads that feature an image of growing cancer cells will run on Facebook(R) through July, 2010.

"Our Facebook(R) ads put the spotlight on exposure to some common chemicals that researchers believe may lead to the development of kidney cancer. One of the most obvious risk factors is cigarette smoking," according to Bro. "In my case, I was a two-pack-a-day smoker. My advice to anyone who smokes is to quit now--before it's too late."

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 50,000 people in the US will learn they have kidney cancer this year. Many will die.

"The key to curing kidney cancer is research, but our near-term goal is to help reduce the incidence by helping the public to better understand some of the risk factors associated with the development of this disease," Bro added.

The KCA was founded in 1990 by Eugene P. Schonfeld, Ph.D., and a small group of patients. Upon Schonfeld's death from kidney cancer in the mid-1990s, Bro succeeded him as chairman. Today, the KCA reaches nearly 60,000 people in more than 100 countries.
