February 21st marks the exciting event of Mardi Gras in New Orleans in 2012! People from all over the country prepare to have their items ordered for the greatest holiday occasion of the southern tier of the United States. The locals of the area have also been planning all year for this event, as many of their business sales rely on the success of this very special traditional weekend.
Mardi Gras begins on the Epiphany, and “Fat Tuesday,” as it is also called, marks the end of carnival season in New Orleans, Louisiana. The first day of Lent is Ash Wednesday, and Fat Tuesday always falls on the day before Ash Wednesday. People from all over the country plan to attend the festivities over the weekend before, usually beginning on Saturday, and enjoying the food, costumes, and parades which all end on Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras actually translates in French to mean “Fat Tuesday.” It was named this to mark the end of the eating of rich foods just before Lent, where the days of fasting begins. In some European countries, where it is also celebrated as a Christian ritual, it is called Shrove Tuesday, and marks a time of confession before the Lenten season begins.
New Orleans comes alive during Mardi Gras with party supplies. The colorful, elaborate costumes and masks are exquisite and over the top. Your child will delight in the excitement of the breath taking sights and sounds. The parades display fabulous creations in the form of floats and fantastic entertainment. The crowds can get overwhelming, so be sure that your boy or girl is protected at all times, the masks that you use allow your child to breathe comfortably, and the costume does not create a hazard as far as tripping over the hem, and so on.
Jazz is the music to be played at these events, as New Orleans is also famous for its wonderful jazz musicians. And something should be said about the mouth watering Cajun spiced foods that are famous in this region of the country. Catfish and deep fried dumplings and the like are just another reason to bring smiles to the Mardi Gras crowds.
