Know What’s Required Before You Travel

Just a few years ago, all you needed to get into some countries like Jamaica were a plane ticket and valid US driver’s license or ID. Now, not only do you need a current passport, but there are also doctor’s papers, such as vaccination cards, that might be required.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) can give you general guidelines as to what is needed and some recommendations depending on how exotic of a locale you will be traveling to. Sometimes, vaccinations differ in accordance with the mode of travel. Some cruise lines are checking to make sure that those going on cruises have tested negative in recent TB tests before boarding ships.

The best prevention against any sort of outbreak or virus is going to see a doctor who specializes in travel vaccinations at least six months prior to your trip. Why so long before? Because some vaccinations require more than one shot and there is a wait time of up to 3 weeks between shots. The travel doctor will have a consultation with you upon the first visit and tell you what he recommends, as well as give you some good old-fashioned common sense advice for travel.

You might assume that you can just go and get shots or vaccinations for everything, but your body might not be able to handle all of them. Anyway, why would you want to pay for something not needed and take on the added risk of having an adverse reaction to a chemical you are injected with?

At the end of your series of vaccinations, the specialist will give you a yellow card that is stamped in specific spots in accordance with which vaccinations you received. This yellow card is an international certificate of vaccination (ICV). It is issued by the World Health Organization and recognized internationally. Next to your passport, this is the most important travel document you have. Be sure not to lose it, and have a safe, healthy trip.
