http://www.kotarastudio.com Early civilization expressed themselves via drawings which later evolved into writing. Pictures became symbols and these two mediums—the visual and verbal arts--shared the root of expressing human ideas and feelings. “Textuality” is an exhibit that inquires into the overlap of these two, seeking examples where the verbal is made visual; where language returns into image. Manifest Gallery was eager to see just how artists make work of any media or genre using text or letter forms as a significant element.
Kotara talks about his Braille, “as a cellular geometry and a system of exchanging ideas.” He says, “Through my Braille works, I am exploring the anthropologic quality of Braille, and considering metaphorical implication to human interaction.” His Braille art is bas-relief and he comments, “On a very basic level, it reminds me of early hieroglyphics. This brings the original concept full circle---language as image.”
The Braille series is one of several of Kotara’s creative expressions. Fascinated with nature – of form, space, and connections between people and their environments – he explores theories of natural and physical science, and the entire cosmos through his numerous works on canvas, paper, Mylar, and Polaroid photography.
Kotara’s work has been included in over 100 exhibitions internationally and is in public and corporate collections. His work also has appeared in television in the HBO series “Treme” based in New Orleans.
