A new exhibition, Homage Squared, October 1 through March 4, 2012 at the Asheville Art Museum, will feature sculptural work of abstract artist Kenn Kotara. An Opening Reception is planned for Sunday, October 2.
Historically, most two-dimensional work has been rectangular in format, but American artist Josef Albers influenced art-making of the 20th century with his series “Homage to the Square” and influenced his many students while teaching at Black Mountain College and Yale University. Asheville Art Museum draws from the Museum’s Permanent Collection of artists who have taken up the challenge of the square and used color and space in unique ways. The exhibition includes several of Alber’s former students as well as contemporary artists such as Kotara. This Asheville artist’s suspended screen sculpture, “Echo”, will be part of the five month exhibition.
Kotara’s work has been included in over 100 exhibitions internationally and is in public and corporate collections. Most recently his work appeared in the second season of the HBO series “Treme” based in New Orleans.
