Founded as a modest general ophthalmic care clinic way back in 1976 by Dr .Prof.M.S.Murugesan, (then Consultant Eye Surgeon at the RIO – GH, Egmore, Chennai) and further expanded to provide specialized retinal and strabismus care in 1983 after his fellowship in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and in Moorfields Eye hospital, London

In recent years the facility has broadened to provide specialty eye care, with the added faculty strength of Dr M. Kumaran MBBS, MS, DNB, MRCOphth(London)

Cataract

The most common cause of preventable blindness in India is easily treated in our hospital with the state-of-art technique and instruments called Microincisional (Mini-Keyhole) Cataract Surgery(Phacoemulsification ). The intraocular lenses (IOL) implanted may be unifocal or multifocal IOL’s . unifocal IOL’s corrects the distance vision and multifocal IOL’s correct distance, intermediate and near vision. Multifocal IOL’s are implanted in selected group of patients only where in the other eye should be operated as soon as possible, atleast within about one month for good visual recovery State –of-the –art IOL’s like Aberration free IOL’s, contrast enhancing IOL’s ,blue blocker IOL’s ,violet shield IOL’s can be implanted.

The surgery is done as a day care procedure where the patient walks in and walks out after the surgery within a couple of hours.
Diabetic Eye Disease
Diabetic retinopathy is the commonest cause of blindness in Diabetic patients which can be easily prevented if detected early by periodic screening, angiography and timely laser. Diabetic retinopathy is bleeding in the blood vessels of the retina due to elevated blood sugar levels. The bleeding may be of varying degree depending on the duration and control of diabetes.

Fundus Flourscein Angiogram (FFA) and Laser (Grid, Focal, and Pan retinal photocoagulation) are done as out patient procedure and patient can return to work immediately on the next day. Lasers are done as a single sitting or multiple sittings (usually 3) depending on the severity of retinopathy.
LASIK and Femto second laser
Lasik is currently the most sophisticated procedure for correction of refractive errors. Lasik is an acronym for Laser Assisted Insitu Keratomileusis. In Lasik, Excimer laser issued for correction of refractive errors.

Lasik is performed as an outpatient procedure with the use of topical anaesthetic drops. Therefore you will be awake during the entire procedure. Your co-operation is of utmost importance to achieve maximum success

For short sightedness (Myopia)

With Myopia, the cornea is too steeply curved and too much focusing power is produced. This makes distant objects blurry, because light is focused in front of the retina. Near objects remain clear When LASIK is performed for myopia, the laser gently flattens the cornea, which lessens the bending of incoming light, thereby allowing it to focus on the retina

For Far sightedness (Hyperopia)

With hyperopia, the cornea does not bend incoming light enough, so light focuses behind the retina Hyperopia causes blurry vision up close and at distance. Hyperopia must be distinguished from presbyopia, which is clear vision at distance with a need for reading glasses up close.
