The LA Conservation Corps Youth Assists the Environmental Media
Association in Building Garden at the Largest Continuation High School in
LAUSD.
The School Garden at Metropolitan High School in Downtown LA Will Be a
Learning Lab and an Example of How to Create a Sustainable Food Source.
Los Angeles, California------January 25, 2012----- The LA Conservation
Corps, in a role supporting the Entertainment Media Association has begun
construction of a school garden at Metropolitan High School, the largest
single-site continuation program in the Los Angeles Unified School
District. Work started this past Monday, January 23rd. The campus is
located at 727 S. Wilson St., Los Angeles, CA 90021 in an industrial area
of downtown, adjacent to Skid Row. The project will consist of clearing
and leveling the garden area, constructing and installing raised garden
beds and filling and planting seeds and seedlings. A ceremonial planting
signifying the completion of this project will take place on Monday,
January 30th at -----(time).
The school garden is part of the Entertainment Media Association (EMA)
School Garden program, in which the LA Conservation Corps is a partner.
Together with EMA’s corporate sponsors and celebrity mentors, the program
created six school gardens last year. EMA believes that students don't
have to learn only within the confines of four walls, but that education
can take place in a dynamic atmosphere that engages students in a unique
and creative fashion.
Signorelli, a neighboring clothing company that supports numerous
charities through the sale of its t-shirts, is the sponsor of the
Metropolitan High School garden. The garden build will culminate with a
planting day on Monday, January 30th in which students, LA Corpsmembers
and volunteers from Signorelli will officially launch the garden by
planting vegetables, herbs and other edibles that the students will
nurture and harvest throughout the school year, learning about
horticulture, nutrition and sustainable agriculture.
Carlos Campero, an LA Corps staff member with over 20 years of experience,
will be the project lead on this garden. His crew of young adults, age
18-24 years old, will gain paid work experience and on-the-job training
while providing a valuable experiential learning space for the teachers
and students at Metropolitan High School.
“This project in particular is special because our corpsmembers come from
similar communities and backgrounds as the students at Metropolitan High
School,” states Campero. “Many share the same challenges and this is a
unique opportunity for peers to work together to create an oasis of
peaceful green space in a concrete urban environment.”
