Retaining walls, driveway barriers, garden boarders, raised garden beds all put wood in the worst possible environment. Boring microbes, bacteria and tunneling insects quickly destroy wood in contact with soil. In the past, salvaged or used rail road ties were thought to be the answer to the problem. They would last a very long time and they were plentiful and cheap. But, they are toxic (creosote, arsenic, copper, chromium, etc...), dirty, sticky with tar and whatever else may have fallen off the bottom of a diesel locomotive. And, there is the disposal issue. If you want to get rid of a creosote rail road tie, it is considered a toxic material and has to be handled as such. This will cost you. The facilities charge by weight!! $$$$$$$ !!
So, the movement was to a slightly cleaner alternative. Pressure treated timbers. The new treatment solutions are copper azol and ACQ. Both are relatively safe, but have a far shorter lifespan. Pressure treated timbers intended for ground contact have a lifespan rating of 15 years. The rating for agricultural and industrial CCA (chromium copper arsenic) is 20 years. CCA is very toxic and its chemicals can become water born and contaminate your soils.
Western Juniper is rated (untreated) at 30 years longer than any other western species at ground contact. This includes heart redwood rated at approximately 25-30 years without rot. Cedar is rated at 15-20 years for high quality old growth heart wood. Juniper can be counted on to last up to and beyond 50 years without rotting.
Oregon State University has submitted the lifespan rating of Juniper from the facts gained in a study that started in 1928 using different western woods as agricultural fence posts. The Juniper still stands today as testimony of the woods resistance to decay. Go to nwsbp.com to find a link to the study and other facts about Western Juniper.
