http://www.languagebee.org William Newman, President and founder of the non-profit, identified, “There has been a persistent and dangerous gap in language development for deaf and hard of hearing children partially due to the lack of integration with technology and the scarcity of usable materials. We are now in a position to align the two by combining print, illustrations and motion graphics into a convenient, user friendly mode for children, schools and families.”
Newman, in his seventeenth year of teaching deaf children, hopes the concept will impact our nation’s educational delivery system for this segment of the population. “We see our products as providing one piece of the puzzle for a child’s access to language. By implementing these DVDs into family settings, siblings and parents can learn sign language while deaf and hard of hearing children increase literacy.”
The design of this interactive language support system allows users to select entire stories, sentences or specific words to gain knowledge in both English and sign language. Language Bee distribution has gone from local to national in an effort to reach the estimated 70,000 youth 6 to 21 years of age who are receiving IDEA-related special education services due to deafness in the public K-12 enrollment.
Jeff Jones, a lead programmer for Language Bee, Inc. added, “The amount of interactivity for each DVD storybook is significant. This level of interactivity, along with the ability to place the signer on any portion of the screen and at any size, gives our research team the ability to incorporate a number of current strategies in literacy instruction.”
