Jacksonville, Florida, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) July 9, 2011 --

The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) took to the road up Interstate 95 to Savannah, GA for the Wilmington Island Junior Open this past Thursday and Friday at the Wilmington Island Club. This was the third consecutive year in which the tour had held a tournament at the Donald Ross designed course. The tour was welcomed with open arms by the staff and, as always, a course which was is near-perfect condition with greens which challenged the juniors throughout the two day tournament. Special thanks goes out to the head golf professional Patrick Richardson for providing the tour and its members with a great couple days of competitive and fun golf for all who were involved.

Coming into the tournament at the Wilmington Island Club, there was hype surrounding local product Chris Sells of Savannah, GA, who was the two-time defending champion in the event. Sells was able to put together a solid two days of golf, but came up just short and finished in a tie for second place. The winner in the Boys 15-19 Division was Logan Lanier of Saint Augustine, FL, and boy was it a long awaited victory for him. Lanier, who finished with a total score of E (73+69=142), had finished in second place in his three prior HJGT tournaments including last weekend at the HJ Glove Jr. Open in Saint Augustine, FL. Lanier credited his ability to “handle the nerves” this time around when he found himself in contention again, by having been in the same position before. This win was not an easy one for Lanier as he found himself three strokes behind the leader after one day of competition, but his second day performance of -2 (69) led to his first HJGT victory of 2011. Lanier was able to post a respectable eight birdies and average a score of 3.86 on the par four holes in the two days of play. The win puts Lanier in a comfortable position in the Summer Points Standings, as the tour pushes into the mid-summer tournaments. Sells, who calls the course his home, finished at +2 (74+70=144) tying him with Stephen Hill of Evans, GA. Hill posted an opening round -1 (70), which actually placed him in first place after one day of competition.
Sells posted eight birdies and shot 80.6% pars or better, while Hill posted a total of 24 pars and averaged a score of 4.83 on the par five holes. The Birdie Challenge award went to three participants in this division as Tucker Anderson of Saint Simon’s Island, GA, Lanier, and Sells all tied with eight birdies a piece.

In the Girls 14-18 Division, Katie Plummer of Buford, GA was able to storm back on her second day of play to take home the first place hardware with a total score of +28 (170). With one day of competition in the books, everyone in the division found themselves looking up the leaderboard at Sara Simons of Fayetteville, New York who was leading by seven strokes after posting an opening round +10 (81). Plummer was in second place, and knew it would take a memorable day to come back from such a deficit. Plummer made it an unforgettable day for her as she posted a second round score of +11 (82) to finish one stroke ahead of Simons. Putting was the key to Plummer’s win, as she credited it for her being able to pick up her first HJGT win of the 2011 season. Plummer posted 11 total pars and two birdies throughout her play in Savannah, GA. Simons led the division in total pars at 16 and average par five performance at 5.33. Finishing in third place was Trisha Mukherjee of Marietta, GA who posted a total score of +30 (172). Mukherjee led the division with three total birdies which earned her the Birdie Challenge award.
