Lapland celebrates many festivals and has several throughout the winter and summer months. The folklore festivals held in the summer months, especially when the midnight sun is at its best and Lapland basks in 24 hour daylight. There are many things to enjoy at this event, with music, education, Lapland artists, sami culture and much more. The midnight sun film festival is another exciting festival in Lapland where artists, directors, up and coming talent and the average person off the street come together. The festival is to unite the love of cinema and because it is again held under the midnight sun, there is a unique atmosphere. The film festival is held in a place called Sodankyla which is about 120 kilometres North of the arctic circle. The festival is well known throughout the world and many famous faces have visited in the past.

The Arctic Lapland rally is another event that is popular and has been in existence since the late 1960s. The event is also well known amongst formula one drivers and brings together rally enthusiasts and competitors of a high level. The event commences the start of the official rally season in Lapland and consists of two classes, the two and four wheel drive. The start and finish lines are situated in Lourdis square and the weather as you can imagine will control this event from start to finish. The snow, ice and the polar nights provide excellent conditions for some great rally driving.
The hot air balloon adventure in Levis kicks off at the beginning of February and people come from over 10 different countries to compete with each other in the sky. The hot air ballooning also involves a night show which gives you the chance to enjoy the cold climate of Lapland with its arctic conditions.

The gold panning championships takes place in the summer months and the first gold panning championship event dates back to 1977. The event which takes place in August sees a rush of people descend on Lapland to erect their tents and park their caravans. The event includes every generation from veterans, old and the very young. The competition is completely friendly and as well as taking part in the competition, participants get the chance to familiarise themselves with the local gold mining history, culture and traditions.
I have only mentioned a few of the festivals and celebrations that take place in Finnish Lapland and there are many more. Like other countries Lapland has much to celebrate and each season and time of year brings another exciting event to become involved in.
