FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) September 3, 2009 -- Chilling…passionate…gripping... David Baird’s latest book is all of these.
Based in Malaga, Spain, the British writer has already made his mark with travel and history books.
Now his first work of fiction has been published and is climbing the bestseller lists. His new book, entitled Don’t Miss The Fiesta!, takes readers to an escapist’s paradise in the mountains of southern Spain.
Picturesque and remote, Benamargo is the sort of village where nothing ever happens. Just the place for city types seeking a refuge from worldly cares.

But under the village’s tranquil surface lurk dark secrets. When an expatriate fleeing from his scandalous past arrives there, he soon encounters an explosive mixture of passion and hatred.
He falls for a beautiful young village girl, but then he realises he has blundered into an emotional minefield, one with nasty surprises at every corner.
Though he found inspiration in true-life incidents, Shropshire-born Baird insists: “The characters in Don’t Miss The Fiesta! are all figments of the imagination and the village of Benamargo does not exist.”
Even so, those familiar with the region will no doubt guess, from clues in the book, where he collected background material.

“The idea originated,” says Baird, “with the experience of some friends. They bought a remote Andalusian farmhouse and sat back to enjoy the simple life. But then strange things started happening and they found they had become embroiled in all sorts of family feuds.
“I think many people have stars in their eyes when they seek rural tranquillity. Every place has its history and memories are long — and here in Spain recent history was very violent.
“So it’s easy for a stranger to stumble into situations he does not understand.”
Events reach a climax in the book as Easter approaches, a time of sinister significance in the village of Benamargo.
A tyrannical, thundering priest is one of the main characters and Baird admits that he is modelled on a clergyman he met years ago in Granada.

“He was an amazing character who ruled his parishioners with a rod of iron. He could have stepped straight out of the 16th century.”
Baird’s acclaimed non-fiction book Between Two Fires — a poignant account of the impact of the anti-Franco guerrilla movement — won critical acclaim, including praise from Lorca biographer Ian Gibson and noted historian Paul Preston.

*** Don’t Miss the Fiesta! is on sale at English-language bookshops in Spain or via the Internet.
It is published by Maroma Press, which also published Between Two Fires.
