There has been speculation surrounding the safety of laser hair removal for both pregnant patients and laser therapists. Is it wise to go for laser hair removal when trying to conceive?
Heatburn, headaches, insomnia and body pains are common discomforts experienced by woman in the first nine months of pregnancy. There are also many hair removal discomforts experienced by women during the nine months of preparation for a child. For instance, the act of bending down whilst undergoing temporary hair removal methods such as shaving cause additional discomfort and become increasing difficult. Many women become desperate in the third trimester to consider more effective methods such as laser hair removal.
In order to answer the aforementioned question of safety, it is important to understand the mechanics of laser hair removal. A laser beam penetrates the skin only a few millimeters to target and eradicate the hair follicle. It is not likely that the laser beam will penetrate deep enough to harm or cause any damage to the developing baby.
Laser hair removal is the most effective solution for permanent hair removal, resulting in an 85-99% reduction at the end of the treatment program. The face, underarms and legs are optimal areas for women to treat. Hair is normally effectively treated with 4 to 8 treatment sessions. During pregnancy however, hormonal changes as well as natural hair growth patterns will determine the actual number of treatments required.
Advice
It is advised that certain areas be avoided especially in the final trimester of the pregnancy. This includes the brazilian and abdomen, which is where the baby is developing. Woman should also avoid treatment on their breasts as they are vital for breastfeeding. However, it is best to avoid laser hair removal until after the delivery.
