FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) August 13, 2009 -- Open Source is probably the most disruptive movement in IT since the mass adoption of the Internet. Open Source Software is deeply pervasive and used by Global corporates and startups alike. The Scottish Open Source Awards is part of a strategy to promote the use and awareness of Open Source in Scotland and to reward those individuals and organisations playing an outstanding part in the Open Source arena.

The Scottish Open Source Awards opens for nominations and entries on 13th August 2009 at 9AM. The awards are open to business, government, education, not-for-profit, charities and students, who contribute to, promote or use Open Source Software or services. Previous winners include JP Morgan and Wolfson Microelectronics.

Speaking for the awards, Greg Soper said, “Open Source is generating exciting and innovative new types of companies, working in different ways on a global scale. In order to thrive, Scotland needs to be at the forefront of Open Source technologies.” Soper added, “The aim of the Scottish Open Source Awards is to reward organisations and individuals who consume, promote and or develop Open Source software and services in Scotland.”

Nominations are invited for any relevant Open Source activities in Scotland or by a Scot or team of Scots outside of Scotland. Details on how to make a nomination are available at: www.opensourceawards.co.uk

The closing date for nominations is Friday 9th October 2009 at 5PM. Presentations will take place at the Scottish Software Awards Dinner in November. Details to be announced.
