FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 29, 2011 -- For a law student who is searching for a legal position, an internship, law student clerkship or legal staff job, it’s important to understand that a resume should present more than just their legal experience. The reason being that most first-time legal positions require more experience than a typical law student will have to present. That being said, it’s important to expand your legal resume to ensure more opportunities for hire.

Most law students will agree that their schooling is primarily spent completing their assignments and learning about their chosen law expertise. A lot of work, study and preparation go into obtaining a law degree and this is both time-consuming and stressful, leaving the students with very little time to add much-needed experience to their resume.

It’s tempting for most law students to put together a resume which highlights their legal skills, but this may be a mistake in today’s extremely competitive market. While a strong applicant should absolutely highlight their technical skills, law experience and academic strength, it is important to expand on their resume in order to set themselves apart from other applicants with virtually the same qualifications, making them much more appealing to potential employers.

One interesting fact that many law students overlook is the idea that their passions and interests may be reflected in much of the academic programs that they’ve participated in. Law students should decide which subject matter interests them most and should take a look at programs, classes and whatever else they’ve participated in, which may reflect this interest. These are the programs, which should be highlighted within their resume.

Consider all organizations, which you belong to and the main reason for your participation. If you’re interested in a specific subject, that can go hand-in-hand with your law degree, this may be work that you can continue with. If you haven’t already joined such organizations, it’s time to begin looking for organizations that match your interests where your law degree and training might come in handy. Many organizations are looking for volunteers for fundraising, research or some other type of work. These are the types of organizations that will add to your law resume and that may set you apart from other applicants.

Potential employers want to know who they are hiring. Anyone can put together a list of credentials and training, but most organizations want to employ individuals who fit in with their team and who they feel will be able to provide a certain measure of client satisfaction and work ethic. By providing interests and passions within a law resume, this adds a small amount of personal interest, which will help to expand your resume overall.

In addition to building a stronger resume by joining these types of organizations, you will also be opening yourself up to more hiring opportunities, while getting your name out there. This will also benefit your resume and may make you a more desirable candidate to potential employers. Today’s market is competitive and your training and skills are important when applying for potential positions, but keep in mind that almost every candidate is presenting a similar set of skills, which makes it difficult to pinpoint you as a unique and sought after candidate to potential employers. By adding information about personal interests, this can very well put you at the top of many employer hiring lists.
