FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 22, 2012 -- The Asia-Pacific convenience stores, neighborhood stores and gas stations retail channel is highly fragmented and is still dominated by small independent traditional family stores in most countries of the region. Japan is a notable exception to this, with its convenience stores, neighborhood stores and gas stations retail channel highly concentrated among a small number of large store chains. Therefore, the overall Asia-Pacific convenience stores, neighborhood stores and gas stations retail channel is dominated by Japanese retail chains such as Seven & I Holdings.

Overall, Seven & I Holdings recorded the best performance among the leading convenience stores, neighborhood stores and gas stations in the Asia-Pacific region, its strong performance driven by the high scores it received for the scale and growth and financial performance pillars. The company was followed by FamilyMart and Lawson, with FamilyMart scoring well on the scale and growth, operational efficiency and financial performance pillars; and Lawson scoring well on the operational efficiency pillar. Three F recorded the weakest overall performance, performing poorly in all pillars of analysis. On an overall basis, five out of eight peer group companies performed better than or comparable to the global channel average.

Under the scale and growth pillar, Seven & I Holdings recorded the best performance in the peer group. The company‘s strong performance can be attributed to the high scores it received for revenue, store count, retail floor space, employee count and market capitalization. In contrast, Three F recorded the weakest performance under the scale and growth pillar, with its performance also below the convenience stores, neighborhood stores and gas stations channel average. Based on the scores received by the peer group companies, it can be inferred that, on average, these companies performed better than the convenience stores, neighborhood stores and gas stations channel average on the retail floor space and store count scale and growth metrics.

FamilyMart registered the strongest performance under the operational efficiency pillar in the peer group, its strong performance being driven by the high scores it received for EBITDA margin, net profit margin and operating profit per employee under the operational efficiency pillar. In contrast, President Chain Store recorded the weakest performance under the operational efficiency pillar. Furthermore, its performance was weak compared with the convenience stores, neighborhood stores and gas stations channel average. In general, the peer group companies outperformed the channel average on EBITDA margin, net profit margin, operating profit per employee and operating profit per square meter. However, their performance on other operational efficiency metrics was comparable to or weaker than the channel average.

Under the financial performance pillar, President Chain Store recorded the most impressive performance among the peer group companies. The company‘s strong performance was driven by the high scores it received for ROCE, return on assets, EV/Sales, and EV/EBITDA. In contrast, Three F recorded the weakest performance under the financial performance pillar, underperforming the channel average. In general, the peer group companies performed better than the channel average on return on assets, earnings per share, quick ratio, EV/Sales and EV/EBITDA. However, their performance on other financial performance metrics was comparable to or weaker than the channel average.
