Epigenetic orthodontics is a process that uses a person's natural genes to correct and straighten the teeth, all without the use of force brackets. In the case of systems such as the DNA Appliance System, no artificial genes or gene-transfer methodology is used; rather, a patient's naturally-occurring genes are used in such a way as to rely on the use of natural developmental processes.

Epigenetic orthodontic techniques work by changing the spatial relations of crooked teeth via a new type of orthodontic appliance, worn in a fashion similar to dental or orthodontic retainers. The DNA appliances activate the various genes that control tooth position, so as to enhance dental and oral health. This includes non-surgical airway remodeling. These new DNA appliances focus less on the use of continuous force but rather help guide the teeth, jaws, TMJ, face and airway into more optimal positions to aid sleep and breathing.
