The European clothing, footwear, accessories and luxury goods retail market is highly fragmented and no single retailer had a market share of 5% at the regional level. The market is dominated by retail chains based in Western Europe. The most important operators in the market include both public retailers which are included in this report, such as PPR, Inditex, H & M, and Next plc; and private retailers such as C&A, Heinrich Deichmann and Arcadia Group.
H & M recorded the strongest overall performance among the leading clothing, footwear, accessories and luxury goods retailers in Europe. The company‘s strong performance was driven by the high scores it received for the scale and growth, operational efficiency and financial performance pillars. Inditex was the second-strongest performing clothing, footwear, accessories and luxury goods retailer, which scored well on the scale and growth, operational performance and financial performance pillars. RNB Retail recorded the weakest performance in the peer group, which was also very low when compared with the channel average. The company‘s poor performance was driven by its weak results in all of the pillars. On an overall basis, five of the peer group companies performed stronger than the channel average.
Next plc was the strongest performer under the operational efficiency pillar. The company‘s strong performance can be attributed to the high scores it received in EBITDA margin, net profit margin, inventory turnover, sales per square meter and operating profit per square meter. The company‘s performance on these metrics was stronger than the clothing, footwear, accessories and luxury goods retailers channel average. In general, the peer group companies performed well on EBITDA margin and net profit margin, compared with the clothing, footwear, accessories and luxury goods retailers channel average performance. Their performance on sales per square meter, operating profit per square meter, sales per employee, operating profit per employee and fixed asset turnover metrics was weaker than the channel average.
