The Middle East and African clothing, footwear, accessories and luxury goods retail market is highly fragmented and is dominated by unorganized operators consisting of independent stores or small store chains. The key retail chains operating in the market are Mr Price, Foschini, Truworths and Fawaz Alhokair. All four retailers are public and are included in the report.
Mr Price recorded the strongest overall performance among the leading clothing, footwear, accessories and luxury goods retailers in the Middle East and Africa. The company‘s strong performance was driven by the high scores it received for the operational efficiency pillar. Truworths was the second-strongest performing clothing, footwear, accessories and luxury goods retailer, scoring well on the operational performance pillar. Foschini was the third-strongest performing retailer, scoring well on the financial performance pillar. Fawaz Alhokair recorded the weakest performance in the peer group, which was comparable with the channel average. The company‘s poor performance was driven by its weak results in the scale and growth and financial performance pillars.
Under the scale and growth pillar, Foschini recorded the strongest performance in the peer group. The strong performance can be attributed to the high scores it received for revenue growth and its competitive advantage in revenue, retail floor space, growth in floor area, store count, growth in store count, employee count, growth in employee count and market capitalization. Based on the scores, the peer group companies performed better than the clothing, footwear, accessories and luxury goods retailers channel average on revenue growth. However, their performance was weaker than the channel average in revenue, retail floor space, growth in floor area, store count, growth in store count and employee count.
