The North American convenience stores, neighborhood stores and gas stations market is moderately concentrated and has several independent stores or small store chains in addition to large national store chains. In 2010, the top ten convenience stores, neighborhood stores and gas stations had a market share of 51.0%. Similarly, the top five public convenience stores, neighborhood stores and gas stations, which are included in the peer group, had market share of 20.4%. The reports peer groups consists Couche-Tard, The Pantry, TravelCenters of America, Casey's General Stores and Susser.

Couche-Tard registered the strongest overall performance among the leading convenience stores, neighborhood stores and gas stations in North America. The company‘s strong performance was driven by the high scores it received for metrics under the scale and growth pillar. Couche-Tard was followed by Casey‘s General Stores and Susser, of which, Casey‘s General Stores registered comparatively high scores in terms of operational and financial performance metrics; whereas, Susser posted strong scores in terms of operational efficiency. In contrast, The Pantry recorded the weakest overall performance when compared to the channel average. The company‘s poor performance was primarily driven by the weak scores it received across all performance pillars. Overall, Couche-Tard‘s performance was comparable to the channel average while that of all other peer group companies was weaker.

Under the scale and growth pillar Couche-Tard registered the strongest performance in the peer group. The company‘s strong performance can be attributed to the high scores it received for metrics such as revenue, retail floor space and employee count. The firm‘s performance was stronger than the channel average but comparable to, or weaker than, the channel average in terms of growth metrics such as revenue growth, store count, store count growth and floor space.

In terms of operational efficiency, Casey‘s General Stores and Susser registered the strongest performance in the peer group. Casey‘s General Stores‘s performance was driven by the company‘s comparative advantage in EBITDA and net profit margins, operating profit per square meter and operating profit per employee. Susser‘s strong performance was driven by the company‘s comparative advantage in inventory turnover, sales per square meter, operating profit per square meter, sales per employee, operating profit per employee and fixed asset turnover. In contrast, TravelCenters of America recorded the weakest performance under the operational efficiency pillar. In general, the peer group companies‘ performance was stronger than the channel average in terms of the inventory turnover, sales per employee, sales per square meter and fixed asset turnover. However, their performance on other operational efficiency metrics was comparable to, or weaker than, the channel average.
