Lee Pesky Learning Center is Celebrating 15 Years

Boise, IDAHO - (February 24, 2012) Lee Pesky Learning Center (LPLC) is celebrating 15 years of improving the lives of people with learning disabilities through prevention, evaluation, treatment, and research. We welcome the public to join us to celebrate our 15th anniversary on February 29th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at LPLC’s main office in Boise located at 3324 Elder Street, Boise, ID 83705. It is because of the support of Center donors and clients that LPLC has been able to grow and help Everybody Learn. We want to be sure to thank everyone who has helped us reach this important milestone.

The evening will include: magic by Kipp Sherry, music performed by Junior Jammers, and a scavenger hunt. Dr. Evelyn Johnson, LPLC executive director will give updates on Center projects and plans, followed by comments from LPLC founder and philanthropist, Alan Pesky. The evening will culminate with a testimonial from LPLC client and founder of the Boise State University Student Club, Greenspeed, Dave Schenker.

LPLC is committed to the prevention of learning challenges and we are pleased to announce the launch of Every Child Ready for Math, a free online course designed to provide early educators and parents with the tools they need to implement high-quality early math instruction. This course supplements the Center’s publications: Every Child Ready to Read: Tips for Developing Your Child’s Early Literacy Skills and Every Child Ready for Math: Tips for Developing Your Child’s Early Math Skills which are being used in early childcare facilities across Idaho as well as across the U.S. For more information visit www.LPLearningCenter.org

Since 1999, LPLC has provided over 1600 comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations to help students, families, and teachers understand the sources of individual learning difficulties. Treatment services at LPLC are tailored to meet the needs of individuals of all ages with learning disabilities. LPLC programs specialize in providing direct, explicit, systematic, multi-sensory reading, writing and math instructional techniques tailored to meet each student’s individual learning needs. Current research shows that typical students receiving academic intervention at LPLC make gains that help them go from initial performances at the 16th percentile (at-risk) to end of program performance at the 50th percentile (at grade level) after 50 hours of academic intervention.

Going forward, the Center will engage in research that enhances the understanding of learning disabilities and identifies interventions that are most effective in supporting positive outcomes. We are presently engaged in several projects with Boise State University. Our goal is to translate research findings to sustainable practices so that students with learning differences can thrive. Lee Pesky Learning Center has a staff of 31 under the direction of Dr. Evelyn Johnson who holds a dual appointment as a Professor of Special Education at Boise State University.

Lee Pesky Learning Center was founded in 1997 to honor the life and accomplishments of Lee David Pesky who struggled with a learning disability throughout his life. Once Lee’s learning disability was diagnosed and treated, he was able to be successful in school, complete college, and open and run his own business. At the age of 30, Lee passed away from an inoperable brain tumor. Through the generosity of his family, donors, and supportive foundations, Lee Pesky Learning Center was created to help others facing similar learning challenges. LPLC has offices in Boise, Caldwell, Ketchum and Hailey, delivers professional development trainings to teachers nationwide and provides treatment services and independent schools in Idaho such as Riverstone International and the Community School.
