LEEWARD SCHOOL BRINGS AWARENESS, AID AND ACTIVISM FOR ANIMAL ABUSE
Kapolei, HAWAII- Students from Leihoku Elementary School in Waianae recently finalized a student learning service project that began last fall culminating in successfully raising more than $1300 in supplies and cash donations for the Oahu SPCA. The program consisted of three elements for the students to learn about including educating themselves and others about animal abuse, earning money to raise donations and budgeting for supplies and then concluding with a field trip to the shelter on Wednesday, January 19. They were also encouraged to invite a friend to attend so they could share what they learned and experience firsthand the animal abuse problems.
The shelter volunteers and staff were on hand to give tours of the dog and cat areas and also educate the 80 students and their teachers about the problem of animal abuse and neglect around the Waianae Coast and how the shelter works to rescue and rehabilitate the hundreds of dogs and cats before finding them foster or adoptable homes. “We are truly grateful to the teachers who supported the students in their project and the hard work and enthusiasm that the children had with making this such a successful event,” said Linda Vannatta, OSPCA board member and volunteer. “It was a pleasure for us to share with them about how they can make a difference in educating others about animal abuse and how they can make a difference to help solve this problem.”
The OSPCA was founded in April of 2009 with a “no-kill” philosophy
rescuing animals suffering from abuse, neglect or abandonment all over the
island each day. Since the facility opened in July of 2009, the OSPCA has
been successful in rescuing, adopting and placing in foster homes more than
1200 animals. The shelter is located at 91-1839 Roosevelt Avenue, Building 1142, Kapolei.
