Til death does its part. It’s kind of funny now that I think of it. And when he’s dressed in the black suit with white trim. He smiles. A smile that light up even the darkest moments of the day. And I stood in front of him. I have a whit dress that for some odd reason was trimmed in black. Don’t ask me why. It was discounted and money was one thing we did have. At the time, money was something we never needed. We joked as we would watch the wedding videos, about how we both looked like a couple penguins. It was perfect in its quirky little way. And he was perfect. He was one of a kind. His name was Eli. So as the apple pie white picket fence fairy tale goes, we both say “I do,” and the Eli is told to kiss the bride. Then it was all snatched from me.
The white picket fence splintered and fell to pieces. The apple pie went bad. And sadly death did its part. Eli was murdered, and I was torn open. I had a gaping wound that would not heal. Being a cop and hunting bad guys was a job but because of my life after he died, some how I felt I was making a difference. But I lost much blood from the injuries that no matter how much I did nothing would heal the wounds. I just lay in the bed with only memories at night wishing he was with me. Wishing that death did not do its part.

Then somewhere among all this emotional drama, confusion and chaos. I started seeing him again. Glimpses of him in crowds at parties. Yet he was always walking away. Always leaving. I thought I was imagining it, until I heard the news that Eli’s grave was robbed of its body. The coffin was empty. Eli had come back. He rose from the grave. It could have been a miracle or it could have been a nightmare. But I couldn’t ignore it. I mean how could I?
Soon I arrive at a scene of a crime. The condemned building that might have a murder in it. The field of a golden knee high grass led up to it. And like in a dream, Eli was there. I went into a run. Forget the murderer. Forget the case. I couldn’t let him get away again. I chased him into the house and I seen him. He was standing there. He looked just the same as he used to. Brown hair. Deep tan. One eye green and the other brown. No doubt it was him. I mean who else could it.

I stepped up to him. My heart raced. My nerves fired. I didn’t know what to think. I mean, he was real. He was right there in front of me.
“Eli?” I say. “Is it really you?”
“It is,” he said simply.
I smiled. I was just so excited to know that he was back. I kissed him. That was when he threw me back against the wall. I hit my head. Pain shot through my shoulders. By the time I hit the floor, it took a second to realize what just happened. He hit me. As shiver of shock rushed through my sore spine, I looked up. Through the mess of brown hair I saw my own gun. It was out of reach. That didn’t stop me from reaching for it but I was quickly pulled away and before I knew it I was tossed down the steps.

I must have hit every splintering board on the way down and then at the end the side of my face slid in dirt. My excitement quickly changed to fear. I looked up at the top of the rotten steps. I jumped up and ran. I ran as fast as I could up the steps. Yet before I could, he closed the door.
I now find myself in darkness, trapped under a condemned building. A possible lair of the murderer. I heard the clicking as the door was locked shut. I was trapped. And I didn’t have a clue of what was going on. The murders and then Eli. I mean he rose from the grave to kill people? I didn’t believe it. I can’t believe. But as I lay in the darkness I couldn’t help but wonder.
And til death did its part. Those words came back to me in that darkness. Was it my turn now?
