December 3, 2010

Researchers have created a patch for soldiers that detects the severity of brain injuries.

LegalView has updated its brain injury portal about a new device that can measure the severity of soldiers’ exposure to explosives. US researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a color-changing patch which soldiers could wear during battle. Once a solider has experienced an explosion, the patch measures its severity by mimicking the reflective iridescence of a butterfly’s wings. Blast-induced traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are the most common forms of injuries that have occurred the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Often soldiers do not receive appropriate care and are sent back into the battlefield before they are fully recovered.

The patch is made up of nanoscale structures whose make-up reflects certain wavelengths. This “blast patch” can be won on soldier’s helmets to immediately alert military personal as to the severity of a soldier’s possible brain injury. The shock waves of an explosion alter the nanoscale structures which change the properties of the patch and therefore change its color. This process is analogous to when an opera singer shatters glass when she sings at a high pitch. The researchers chose to use color-changing crystals that are designed to break-apart when exposed to a blast shock wave. The material is designed so the extent of the color change corresponds with the severity of the brain injury.

Over 1.4 million Americans suffer from some form of traumatic brain injury every year. Of those, 50,000 die and over 200,000 require hospitalization or treatment. Many experience altered or loss of functional ability. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are over 5 million people suffer from traumatic brain injuries that have life-long affects. The financial, emotional, and physical distress that these injuries cause families can be much more than expected. Since this is often times the case, one cannot plan for such a life-changing event.

The causes of traumatic brain injury are various. They include: car accidents, firearms, and falls. Many of those who suffer from a TBI seek a brain injury attorney for a variety of reasons that may have contributed to their brain injury. LegalView has several traumatic brain injury lawyers who represent those who have been affected by this traumatic, life-changing injury.

In addition to TBIs, LegalView offers information about filing a potential
mesothelioma lawsuit, the deadly lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
