SHEA BUTTER ECOCERT FAIR TRADE AGREEMENT

To take its joint development approach even further, L’OCCITANE asked for its shea butter network in Burkina Faso to be awarded EFT certification. This enables women to set up a more efficient structure and to use the EFT label to make their products more attractive to other international clients, thus offering more opportunities for development.

EFT (Ecocert Fair Trade in the spirit of solidarity and responsibility) is a label awarded by Ecocert. It is aimed at establishing a sustainable development approach through commodity chains based on a close partnership with producers. Each year, an in- depth audit is conducted at the production site.

A sustainable joint development - programme with Burkina Faso

L’OCCITANE has built up a sustainable partnership with the women of Burkina Faso. 20 years ago, there were fewer than a hundred women. Today, there are over 12,000, working in four different groups and producing precious shea butter for L’OCCITANE. This exchange is more than just a commercial relationship. L’OCCITANE supports the work of these women by purchasing the butter they make directly from them. A fair price is paid, which covers production costs, as well as environmental and social costs, and also leaves a margin for investment. The women receive an 80% advance payment on all orders, to avoid any potential cash flow problems. In 2009, L’OCCI TANE purchased 375 tons of shea butter –of which 60 tons were organic.

What are your thoughts about EFT certification?

"For me, EFT certification has given us a real boost and has many positive aspects, even though it also imposes certain constraints. From a social point of view, there has been an improvement in the living conditions of the people involved.
